At only 5 hours from Mexico City you can explore Cuetzalan, one of the most magical of the current 131 Pueblos Mágicos. Apart from exploring it’s well conserved colonial center, we can also explore the nearby waterfalls, the archeological site and the incredible botanical garden. With some of the most astonishing views that México has to offer on the way. Our prefered base is a beautiful hacienda hotel with swimming pool, right in the center of the town.
Historical town center of Cuetzalan
Cuetzalan is for us one of the most magical of the current 131 Pueblos Mágicos. It´s historical colonial center is very well conserved, very well maintained and very clean. Cuetzalan is without any doubt one of the most traditional Pueblos Mágicos. Indigenous men and woman flaunt their traditional dress, as white as the mist that sometimes descends into town. Some carry goods on their back that they’ll sell during the day, but all walk with the pride of their ancestral legacy. Cuetzalan is a town where the past lives on.

The perfect base
Our favorite base is a beautiful hacienda hotel with swimming pool, right in the center of the town.

Exploring the Xoxoctic botanic gardens
Near Cuetzalan, you can explore the lush botanical gardens of Xoxoctic. That keeps you wondering about for at least 1,5 hours, ask for the guided walk.

In the botanical garden you can also obtain information on how coffee is produced, and try and buy some of the best coffee of México.

Exploring the archeological site of Yohualichan
Yohualichan is a small but beautiful site that constitutes an important link in Puebla’s pre-Hispanic history: it is thought to have been constructed by the same people that built the twin city of El Tajin in Veracruz.

Exploring the nearby waterfalls
Nearby Cuetzalan, we can explore some beautiful waterfalls. The journey to get there is as beautiful as it´s destination: first we have a short and beautiful drive of about 30 to 40 minutes to get to the waterfalls, and then we can enjoy a beautiful walk of about 60 minutes to the waterfall and back, in a lush environment and along a small river.

More exploring in Cuetzalan
In the center of the village, you can admire the Iglesia de San Francisco de Asis, opposite the “voladores” (flyers) of Cuetzalan who perform their traditional dance. And don’t forget to visit the Handicrafts Market and the Templo de los Jarritos. And to try its delious regional food!
