Hiking the Nevado de Toluca volcano in the State of Mexico

Let´s make an otherworldly adventure, hiking the crater lakes of Nevado de Toluca. Here we can hike through alpine terrain to reach two stunning aquamarine crater lakes, we we can take in panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and volcanoes and spot unique high-altitude flora and fauna around the lakes. The first lake is an intense shade of blue surrounded by volcanic rock, while the second is a more esmerald green. Taking in these sights will recharge your spirit and energy ! This hike is perfect for nature lovers seeking an off-the-beaten-path adventure in Mexico.

In the State of Mexico, around 2.5 hours from Mexico City, we can find the amazing the amazing Nevado de Toluca volcano. In the Nahuatl language the name is Xinantecatl which can be translated as The Naked Lord. It is a large stratovolcano located about 80 kilometres (50 mi) west of Mexico City near the city of Toluca. It is the fourth highest of Mexico’s peaks, after Pico de Orizaba, Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl.

There are two crater lakes on the floor of the basin that we can explore on a hike of about 3.5 hours, at about 4,200 m (13,800 ft), the larger Lago del Sol (Sun Lake) and the smaller, but deeper, Lago de la Luna (Moon Lake). If you just like to hike up to the crater to enjoy the great views that is also possible.

The trip is not too heavy, we take it slow to get adjusted to the height; you can make the trip as heavy as you want, during this great encounter with nature.

For the peaks we strongly recommend to go with the necessary equipment, for the moment we can only help with a private trip to go to the peaks, ask us for a quote.
